Coweta Asks Voters To Vote Again For Sales Tax Increase After Technical Error

The City of Coweta is asking voters to approve a one cent sales tax, even though they already did in September.

Police Chief Mike Bell said it's difficult for police to do what they do for the city without a new building.

The police department would get a new space as part of the One for Coweta sales tax increase.

"The projects that are laid out in the first tranche are things that this community has needed for a long time." said City Manager, Roger Kolman.

Voters approved the increase in September with 72 percent of the vote, but it didn't count.

City Manager Roger Kolman said since it wasn't posted in the Wagoner County American-Tribune, they need to do it all again.

"I'm hopeful that the electors who so strongly believed in it the first time, will come back to the polls," he said.

Fire Chief Jerry Burtner said they've outgrown their space too.

If passed, they'd get an upgrade to their current space and a new station, which would really improve their response times.

"We don't have access to facilities on the north end of town, so it takes us several minutes to respond up there," he said.

He said they are hopeful people will get out and vote again.

"It's all going to reflect back onto the citizens of Coweta," he said.

Kolman said the proposal has been posted in the paper and the election is scheduled for February 8.
