Many school districts are dealing with an issue that's been ongoing for years and has been getting worse in the past couple of years. Broken Arrow Public Schools held a hiring event Monday to try to hire more bus drivers.
Karen Sanders said she's looking for a job with flexibility so she can spend more time with her grandkids after they're out of school. “I like children. I like the school system. Broken Arrow, my two boys went to Broken Arrow," said Sanders.
She said she's wanted to drive a school bus for years. She's retired and her husband recently passed away. “I told him I wanted to be a bus driver for whatever reason. I’m a people person. So yeah that’s why. I just want to be a people person available for my granddaughters when they get off school," said Sanders.
The flexible schedule is just one of the perks of being a bus driver for the school district. They also need to hire mechanics, aides, and substitute bus drivers to fill in when needed. “Especially with COVID-19 running rampant right now. You have so many drivers who are sick or out that aren’t necessarily leaving they will be back but we need those routes covered," said Danny O'Brien.
O'Brien is the lead bus driver for Broken Arrow and said new hires receive paid training that lasts around six weeks. He hopes more people from the community will pursue a career he said is rewarding.
“Our department really needs the help and I think it is a really rewarding job most people will really enjoy and I think most of us if you like kids then this would be the job for you," said O'Brien.
