Muscogee Nation leaders said they were unaware a sheriff canceled her county's cross-deputization agreement until a reporter reached out for comment.

Hughes County Sheriff Marcia Maxwell wrote a letter earlier this week.

The letter claimed tribal police refused to assist on tribal calls and that the tribe isn't prosecuting cases.

However, the tribe said that in their agreement, Lighthorse Police do not need to respond to a scene when deputies are already there.

The tribe added that deputies do not need to be present to prosecute a tribal case.

The tribe's press secretary said the sheriff's letter has misinformation and that the Tribal Attorney General could provide resolutions to each case.
