A program in Tulsa County is helping people who may struggle to afford prescriptions get the medicine they need.

Tulsa County partners with local medical providers to repurpose unused and unexpired medication and distribute it to lower-income residents in Tulsa County.

The Tulsa County Recycled Medication Program started in 2004 and provided more than $1 million in recycled medication just last year.

County leaders say since the program started, more than $27 million in prescriptions have been filled.

The Recycled Medication Program partners with local providers to transport the unused medication to Tulsa County Social Services.

Tulsa County says the program was a first of its kind back in 2004.

Since then, program leaders say other places across the country and around the world have implemented prescription repurposing programs of their own.
