The Akdar Shrine Circus is happening this weekend at Tulsa Expo Square. It's been a Tulsa tradition for decades. From elephants to motorcycles on a trapeze to skits from clowns, there is so much to see at the family-friendly event.
"From two years to 102, there's something here for everybody,” said Ringmaster Ari Steeples.
Going on more than 70 years, the Akdar Shrine Circus is part of Tulsa's history. Circus acts include a magic act from Las Vegas, contortionists, jugglers, Puppy Pals as seen on America’s Got Talent, giant wheels of destiny and daredevils. There's no shortage of entertainment.
Money from the circus supports the Shriners fraternity, which helps fly children in need of medical treatment to their hospital in Galveston. The Shriners most recently helped an Okmulgee teenage burn victim on Sunday.
Steeples has been a ringmaster for more than three decades. He's been attending and performing at the circus since 80s.
"It’s a great family event where they can come out and enjoy two and a half, almost three hours if they get here early, for all the rides and everything."
This year means a lot to Steeples.
"For us, it's special because we're finally back to tour. We were shut down for two years during COVID and it is really nice to be back touring doing what we do, this is what I love to do."
The circus kicked off Thursday night. Performances are at 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Friday, February 25. There are several throughout the weekend at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Saturday, February 26 and Sunday the 27.
