Discovery Lab Offers Young Girls Opportunity To Learn About Engineering

The Discovery Lab in Tulsa invited young girls to learn about engineering this weekend.

The goal of these camps was to teach young girls how to code robots, design catapults, and even build bridges.

At the Discovery Lab's “Introduce a Girl to Engineering” workshop, girls from six to twelve years old worked with an adult mentor to solve different engineering challenges.

Fourth-grader Kyla Estes says she likes the chance to do science projects outside of the classroom.

“I like science projects because you get to do stuff and learn about other things that you most likely don't know about,” said Kyla.

Her mother Camillia says she thinks it’s important for Kyla to try new things and learn about different potential jobs.

“As a child, they are still learning who they are going to be, and I think it is important to have her go and learn multiple different potential jobs she can do as an adult,” said Camillia.

The goal of the program is to teach girls that they can be anything they want to be, even engineers.

"I would really like them to see that there are women engineers and that there are so many different things they can do,” said Megan Miller, a volunteer. “They don't necessarily have to be great at math or great at science, they just have to be creative and have a passion for learning and doing."

Miller adds that having more women in the engineering field can add a different perspective.

“I think it’s so important because the more women we have in engineering the more diverse our teams can be, having more diverse teams gives us more creative solutions, the more creative we are the more successful we are as businesses,” Miller said.
