A Tulsa Police Officer received an award after saving a man’s life.

Officer Darrell Ross said he’s thankful for the training he received that helped him know what to do.

“When that moment comes, you really do fall back on your training,” said Ross.

Ross was awarded Tulsa Police’s Life Saving Award after reviving a man who had overdosed.

When Ross arrived on the scene, he says the man had no pulse.

"I dragged him out to his living room, started CPR, another lieutenant was there and she helped try to revive him, we did compressions while EMSA and TFD were on their way, and when they got there, just when they walked in, he started breathing again and resuscitated,” Ross said.

He says this award also shows the department that his training has paid off.

“It also lets the people know who trained me that it actually worked and what they teach us is very useful,” said Ross.

He says the feeling of knowing he helped save the life of someone else is one like no other.

In the back of your head, you're like ‘it worked again,’ said Ross. “You feel this lightbulb of triumph over your head when the person, they take that breath and you are just like ‘ok, they're still here, we’re good.”

Ross said he recommends everyone signs up for a CPR class because you never know when you might need to use it.
