Tulsa Public Schools held a career fair Wednesday and will have another one Thursday.
The district said they need to hire nearly 100 people to fill immediate job openings that directly impact the students.
“To see them grow from when they’re in kindergarten to 12th grade and graduate and our custodians they go to the graduation. Even some of the maintenance team, you know the office staff. They all go to the kid's graduations and I think that’s really great because they had an impact on their lives as well," said Brenda Royal.
Royal said the students are the reason the jobs are so important. That's why they are hoping the career fair will help them fill the need.
“The kids are really deserving because you know our custodians, they know those babies and those babies always come back to see them and so that just brings joy to their heart when those kids come back and remember them. See them in the store I mean they just love it, they love it," said Royal.
She said the past two years have put a strain on the district and the openings they need to fill include custodial staff, maintenance, campus security, police, and dispatchers.
“We need people. Security is down at least nine people. We need to hire some police officers. We need to get some people in there so they can keep our schools safe," said Rebecca Thompson.
Thompson is the lead dispatch security for campus police and said they are trying to recruit more people to the campus police department so they can keep thousands of students safe each day. She said the work is rewarding.
“Seeing the joy in the kids. If we’re having a hard day in dispatch it's nice to be able to pull up the cameras and you can see the kids are out on the playground having a great time. They don’t know anything is going on and that’s where it’s at," said Thompson.
