Tulsa Airbnb Owners Set To Cash In During PGA Championship

The PGA Championship and 2022 IRONMAN are nearly seven weeks away, bringing thousands of people and their pocketbooks to Tulsa. Tulsa hotels are already booked, and many Airbnb's are going for double or even triple the normal rate. In fact, Airbnb and VRBO hosts could make more in seven days during the week of the PGA than some folks take home in a year.

The Brown family owns several properties in Tulsa. One of their Airbnb's was booked for May 16 through the 22 -- six months ago.

"They caught me by surprise. I didn't necessarily put in my mind that PGA week was the week that it was, and so somebody got a great rate on at least one of the doors that we have and so we adjusted quickly afterwards," said Gannon Brown.

Gannon Brown is a realtor and believes the PGA could open doors for potential new investors, inspire visitors to move here, and make Tulsa a top hosting site for future events.

"Vendors, business owners, they're all watching," said Brown.

This is Brown's personal home and it isn't normally an Airbnb. For the week of the PGA, it's listed for $4,000 a night. He said you can't turn down that kind of money.

He said come mid-May, if this place is booked, he, his wife and three boys will gladly pack up and stay with family or friends.

"What we thought, we would try and capitalize on, you know, is putting our home forward as an opportunity for somebody to come in and enjoy some amenities that also align with golf. So we've got a putting green in the backyard and a golf cart that they can go drive around the neighborhood," said Brown.

Homes listed on Airbnb can be seen with captions like "perfect for the PGA" and listed for thousands of dollars a night, depending on the size, quality, amenities, and distance to Southern Hills Country Club.

"We have some smaller Airbnb's that we also manage and those are three, four times the normal price. When you get into the luxury market, it's higher than that, for sure. I would say a normal home like this could maybe bring $1,000 a night on a good week or a high trafficked week, but with the uniqueness of the PGA, you're getting three, four, five sometimes 10 times that multiple," said Brown.
