April Fools' Day is an annual excuse for pranksters to pull practical jokes on people for fun.
Some tricks are simple as making a recipe, but the food tastes the opposite of what it looks like, playing a prank on your taste buds. One classic April Fools' joke looks like breakfast, but it's dessert. It looks like a sunny-side-up egg on a piece of toast, but when you take a bite, that's not what you get.
Tara Rittler with Tulsa Kids Magazine says a fun idea for April Fools is making a backward meal where the food items are disguised as other food. For this breakfast treat, she buttered and toasted a slice of Angel Food Cake. Next, she spread vanilla yogurt on the cake for the egg white and half of a canned apricot for the yolk. You can add a fun touch by putting Jell-O in a cup to look like juice! Rittler says an idea for a savory edible trick is a meatloaf cupcake: meatloaf in muffin tins, mashed potatoes as frosting, and chopped chives as sprinkles.
For another healthy option, you can make frozen peaches dipped in yogurt with sprinkles disguised as a donut. She played a prank on her 7-year-old son by giving him a bowl of cereal that she froze overnight.
“So, he really gets into it and it's just kind of fun because then you get to give your kids a treat, and they always love that. I think it's just a way to show them you're thinking about them and celebrating a holiday,” Rittler said.
These pranks are edible and harmless.
Rittler says most kids will get a kick out of it unless they're craving a real donut, not a peach.
