The judge, prosecutors and defense attorneys just finished day four of jury selection in the David Ware trial. Ware is charged with killing a Tulsa Police Sergeant and shooting another officer during a traffic stop two years ago.
It's a slow and repetitive process, but it’s needed to make sure they find 12 fair and impartial jurors. They need 55 death penalty and pre-trial publicity qualified jurors before they can move to a normal jury selection.
After Thursday, 27 people have been qualified and passed to the next round and 32 people have been sent home.
Some have had strong opinions about the case and the death penalty. Some have had personal issues in their life that made it too hard for them to be here for a month long trial. Some have relatives in law enforcement.
Prosecutors and the defense attorneys have both said that they have been pleased with how many people have come into this with an open mind regardless of their personal opinions.
Since so many people have already been excused, they will bring in either 50 or 100 more people next Monday to hopefully get to 55 by the end of next week. They plan to start evidence April 18.
