The 29th street district in Oklahoma City is celebrating National Children's Day.

Dia Del Ninos Festival is all about celebrating kids and embracing their Hispanic heritage. Organizers of the festival said they want kids to know National Children's Day is designed to show kids their community has their back.

The Southwest 29th Street District is home to many Oklahomans.

“I think 29th street reminds me a lot of Mexico. When I come here I see a lot of businesses that have a lot of products that come from Mexico,” Paola Quiroz said.

The district is a predominately Hispanic community stretching three miles long, with more than 300 businesses.

“A lot of the kids in the community have roots to the Latin American culture, like Mexican Americans, Colombians and different things like that. We want to highlight Hispanic culture within Oklahoma City,” Elizabeth Larios Rodriguez said.

Cecilia Tarin said she grew up on Southwest 29th street.

“It has a very special place in my heart. I come here if I'm feeling sad so I can feel a little sense of home in here. From blood or not blood you can form your own family with this and this community. They don't have to be related to you they can be your neighbor and they can be the closest family you have,” Tarin said.

And that's exactly what organizers of Dia Del Ninos want kids to understand. The festival was also lined with booths eager to help out families in the area. Kids were crowned as royalty for using their voice in their community.

“I really wanted to be a part of it because I like helping the community. Since I’m Latina it would be cool and fun to represent,” Karely Martinez said.

Senator James Lankford, Councilman James Cooper and other officials also attended showing their support to our little Oklahomans.
