People from all over Oklahoma are giving back to Edmond Police Sergeant C.J. Nelson's family as they heal from the tragic news of his death.

Charley Howard and her friends opened their own lemonade stand in Edmond. They accepted donations to help the family of fallen Edmond Police Sgt. CJ Nelson.

“It's a good cause for their family,” Howard said.

Along with a lemonade stand, Charley's parents and their friends decided to organize a car wash. The Deer Creek High School Football team pitched in to help.

Charley said Sergeant Nelson's wife was once her teacher.

“She was a really nice teacher, and we had a lot of fun in her class,” Howard said.

“Her husband would come on his motorcycle and speak to the kids. He taught them that you need to remember your addresses, remember our phone numbers, and that really resonated with her,” Howard said.

Across town, another group came together in times of tragedy.

“So far, we've raised over $1,205. It's going directly to the Nelson family,” Steve Wilson, member of Oklahoma Jeepers Jeep Club said.

Wilson said when his community is hurting, they step up to serve.

“If we don't support the law enforcement community then we won't have a law enforcement community at all. They already struggle with recruiting strong people that stand for what's right,” Wilson said.

Steve said Sgt. Nelson's impact lives on, and he wants his family to know their community has their back.

“We are a community. When one is down, we take care of everybody,” Wilson said.
