There are 2,977 flags in front of Jenks High School in memory of the victims of the 9/11 attacks. Twenty-one years ago, hijacked planes crashed into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania.
"Remembering that day, that’s what reflection is about. Reflect on seeing the smoke in the first tower on TV. Reflect on seeing the second plane hit the building. Reflect on hearing people call their loved ones and say they’re never coming back,” Oklahoma Supreme Court Justice, Dana Kuehn said.
The world was in shock after 2,977 innocent lives were lost in the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
These Jenks High School students weren't even born yet, but they said they can feel the tragedy and weight of that day.
"Whenever people see that amount of flags, they realize that's a lot of people, which is important for people my age and grades younger, to see the reality of what happened,” Event Organizer, Isabella Suttee said.
Those who spoke said 9/11 will never be forgotten.
“The only way as a nation we can remember what it costs to be free is to have events, and remind ourselves, and study it, study history,” Army Col., Robert Walker said.
Students said they have learned about the attacks in their history books and from their parents. But they said nothing compares to hearing what that day means to first responders and military members.
Organizers said the flags will be up all weekend if you would like to come see the display and pay your respects.
