A traffic stop in Cleveland, Oklahoma, led to a pursuit that reached speeds of 120 mph before police were able to capture the driver and passenger after it crashed into a ditch in Sand Springs, authorities say.

Clint Stout, Cleveland Police Chief, said the driver was a man and the passenger was his pregnant girlfriend. Neither of their names has been released.

"They were being very suspicious when we were talking to them, didn't want to give names, didn't want to get out of the car, for good reason," Stout said.

Police pulled the car over because it had paper tags and the VIN number showed it was stolen.

Authorities said the driver sped off during the traffic stop after being asked to step out of the car.

"As soon as we told them to get out, the passenger puts it in drive, he punches the gas and the chase was on from there," Chief Stout said.

The chase lasted 20 minutes before the crash near West 11th Street and Apple Creek Drive around 10:30 a.m.

He says Sand Springs police officers were able to set up stop sticks and that popped the car's tires.

"He put numerous drivers in danger, he would pass on the right, he would take an exit, jump the service road, hit the on-ramp, and jump right back on 412. They were throwing stuff out of the vehicle, the driver and the passenger, at the pursuing officer," Stout said.

Both the man and woman are being treated at a hospital for minor injuries.
