The DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is happening this Saturday, October 29, 2022 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., and there are several locations in Green Country where you’ll be able to bring your unwanted, unused or expired prescription drugs for safe and proper disposal.

Please note that News On 6 will not be hosting a drop-off event this fall.

Find a local drop-off event near you:

  1. Five Reasor’s locations (11116 S Memorial Dr, Bixby; 3915 S Peoria Ave, Tulsa; 7114 S. Sheridan Road, Tulsa; 11815 East 86th St. N., Owasso; 2001 S. Muskogee Ave, Tahlequah)
  2. Walgreens (2323 W Edison St, Tulsa; 11332 E 31 St., Tulsa)
  3. The M.e.t. Recycling Center (3495 S Sheridan Rd, Tulsa)
  4. Crime Stoppers at Promenade Mall (4107 S. Yale Ave. - NW parking lot by JCPenney, Tulsa)
  5. Elks Lodge (5335 S. Harvard, Tulsa)
  6. Walmart (4720 E 21 St., Tulsa; 1300 Albany St., Broken Arrow)

  8. Northeastern Health Systems (1400 E Downing Street, Tahlequah)

Pharmaceutical drugs can be just as dangerous as street drugs when taken without a prescription or a doctor’s supervision. The non-medical use of prescription drugs ranks second only to marijuana as the most common form of drug abuse in America.

Proper disposal of unused drugs saves lives and protects the environment. The majority of those abusing prescription drugs get them from family and friends, and the home medicine cabinet. Unused prescription drugs thrown in the trash can be retrieved and abused or illegally sold. Unused drugs that are flushed contaminate the water supply.

Take-back programs are the best way to dispose of old drugs. But if a program is not available:

  1. Take the meds out of their bottles
  2. Mix them with something unappealing like used kitty litter or coffee grounds
  3. Seal them in a bag or disposable container and throw that away
