Tulsa Parks is teaming up with the University of Tulsa to get more kids involved in recreational activities by forming a youth basketball league.
The basketball league will be called the Hurricane Youth Basketball League, and it will give kids from kindergarten through 5th grade the opportunity to get out and participate in recreational activities. While Tulsa Parks has youth sports programs that kicked off again coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic, Tulsa Parks wanted to partner with local organizations to create better programming and get more kids involved.
That is where the University of Tulsa came in, because according to Dustin Jaggers, Tulsa Parks' Recreation Programs Manager, the University of Tulsa has also been looking to get involved in the community.
"The more things that we do together, the stronger city we’re going to have, and when it comes to serving citizens, serving the community, it takes people partnering together to really serve in the best way that we possibly can," Jaggers said.
While there are several competitive sports leagues across the city, Jaggers said that this recreational program gives kids the chance to learn to play basketball for the first time.
Registration runs through December, and anyone interested can sign up at tulsaparks.org or pick up a registration form at any Tulsa park. Registration is $65 a child which covers the jersey, the games, and the practices throughout the season. The games will tip off in January and run for eight weeks.
