A Pottawatomie County high school basketball team is putting their town on the map after a stunning win in a statewide tournament.

The win is thanks, in part to a standout player and college coaches across the country are taking note.

In the town of 350 people, you won’t find a traffic light, but there is something in Dale, Oklahoma, causing others to stop and pay attention.

Head Coach of the Dale Pirates, Jeff Edmonson, says it was a matter of time.

“If I’m picking a team and you give me first pick, I’m picking Dayton Forsythe.”

Dayton Forsythe is a junior star with a life-long lover affair with the game of basketball.

“Since I can remember,” says Forsythe. “Even at my house we had a Little Tikes goal in our living room and me and my brothers used to go at it for hours.”

It was last month that top programs fell in love with his game.

The small-town school shocked the state by winning the Tournament of Champions in Tulsa.

“The next morning I woke up because my phone was ringing,” Forsythe recalls. “It was Coach Boynton from OSU.”

He received an offer from the Cowboys, then the Sooners, then the Wake Forest Demon Deacons that same day.

So far, nine programs now hope the junior will put on their jersey in 2 seasons.

Coach Edmonson says he isn’t surprised. He has coached the Pirates 17 years. He has coached Dayton close to 9.

“Since 2nd or 3rd grade,” Edmonson says. “Dayton is a special player. I think he is the best player in the state of Oklahoma.”

Dayton says he had to pinch himself to be sure he was in reality. He hopes to make his town of 350 proud.

“It means a lot showing that even if you are from a small school you can do big things.”

The Pirates sit at 19-0. They hope to compete for their 2nd straight 2A State Title.
