Some people try to avoid the winter weather, while others embrace it to make a living. There are the usual suspects like the snowplow drivers.

“It’s a hard job to be quite honest with you, but they’ve done it for so many years. They’re very good at what they do,” said Raymond Melton, Street Superintendent of Oklahoma City.

There are also people like Paula D.

“It’s not easy,” Paula said. “It takes a lot of patience.”

You might have met Paula yourself when she delivered the food you ordered on DoorDash or Uber.

“If they pay for it, I’ll go as far as they want me to go,” Paula said.

Delivery drivers like Paula offer service even during winter storms. Paula can decide what weather is worth the risk, but some drivers embrace the harsh weather. All they ask is for people to be patient and tip. Even if there’s that pesky delivery charge.

“Delivery fee is something that Uber, Postmates, DoorDash is charging you,” Paula said.

A creditcard.com survey shows fewer people say they tip people like delivery drivers. The survey shows a 6% decline in the number of people who say they always tip their delivery drivers from 2019 to 2022.

Something people can consider when ordering delivery, it doesn’t cost much to be generous. Customers never know what’s happened to some of these drivers in their past that has forced them to take the job they have.

“That’s a whole story,” Paula said.

Paula lost her job before she took this one.

“Being fired from my job, it really threw me off my game for a while,” she said.

Paula is doing what she can to get by, but she said a customer’s kindness drives her motivation.

“It just makes me smile, you know,” Paula said.

Those simple gestures provide the fuel Paula needs to brave the cold so others can stay home.
