An aerial rescue event Saturday in Coweta is getting high praise from the people who took part. Oklahoma Rescue is a tree climbing competition-style training event where folks come to practice different aerial rescue scenarios.
Organizers say Oklahoma Rescue is the only event like this in the state.
The training goal is to help people practice what to do in case of emergencies.
Cody Willard is a certified master arborist in Tulsa, and he attends events like this to further his education.
"It's just so if we're ever around an event like this it's first nature, you know we have the muscle memory and we know how to react and respond systematically so everything goes smooth," Willard said.
A lot of aerial rescues only do one-on-one training, but Oklahoma Rescue allows multiple people to work together in different scenarios they could encounter in life.
Willard says everyone is learning together, working as a team, and sharing ideas.
Jesse Taylor says this is the third event he's done and he's happy he gets to teach people in his community about aerial rescue.
"It's not only about doing the rescues and being able to do that, it's about you getting to an environment like this of things being done properly," Taylor said.
Taylor says the people who attend probably won't be rescuing someone every week, but it's about knowing what to do if something were to occur.
“The tree industry is growing in Oklahoma as far as proper work practices, we are the newer generation of arborists out here and the main thing is practicing safety,” Willard said.
