Tulsa Parks is planning an $8 million makeover of Johnson Park, at 61st and Riverside, to make it a “destination park” according to Anna America, the Director of Tulsa Culture and Recreation.
Tulsa voters approved $3 million for the first steps to rebuild it and $5 million will be part of the next Improve our Tulsa package.
The park is usually empty, although it has a playground and basketball courts and is near one of the most densely populated neighborhoods in Tulsa.
“The fields are all in terrible condition, so people come out there and practice sometime but there are really no other amenities,” said America, as she showed the Tulsa City Council around the park Tuesday morning.
“First and foremost we want this park to serve this neighborhood, but it's also a highly visible great destination park so we hope it will connect this neighborhood to Tulsa,” she said.
The plans for the park include a trail around the perimeter, a covered basketball court, a water feature, and dog park.
