A Tulsa woman is dead and her son is in custody after police said he strangled her to death.
The incident happened at the South Glen Apartments on Thursday afternoon, police said. Police said they arrived at the apartment around 3:30 p.m. and found the woman in poor condition after being strangled. Drayk Jones, the victim's son, was arrested at the scene, police said.
EMSA rushed the victim to the hospital, where she later died, according to police.
“The homicide detectives were out here already. They have taken numerous witnesses and the suspect down to the detective division for questioning," TPD’s Captain Richard Meulenberg said.
Officers said they have been called out to the same apartment in the past for other domestic-related issues.
“That is not atypical to have calls of domestic violence, and then it escalates to the point where, unfortunately, one person just makes it a horrible, horrible set of actions and it takes the life of somebody else,” Meulenberg said.
Police said there is support available for victims to escape domestic violence situations.
“There are resources, but they’ll have to take those first steps. They’ll have to find the resources and then if you can get out of that situation, you have to stay out of it. It takes tremendous strength to get out of that situation and sometimes you don’t even realize how bad it is,” Meulenberg said.
Jones is being held in the Tulsa County jail for first-degree murder.
