Stars Of 'Champions' Movie To Attend Screening At Sapulpa's Tee Pee Drive-In Theater

Some movie stars are coming to Green Country to advocate for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Sapulpa's Tee Pee Drive-In is hosting a free screening of the movie "Champions" Saturday, May 20, as a fundraiser to help the nonprofit, Best Buddies.

Owners of the Tee Pee Drive-In said their goal of bringing back this attraction is to bring the community together. It's a bonus when it also raises money for a great cause.

In the film Champions, based on a true story, Woody Harrelson is ordered to volunteer to coach a team of basketball players with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Mark Wylie with Best Buddies, an international nonprofit that creates opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, helped Universal Pictures with the casting.

"These guys are true testaments that given the opportunity, the universe is the limit," Wylie said.

News On 6's Chinh Doan talked with stars Madison Tevlin, Joshua Felder and Matthew Von Der Ahe, who said they had a blast filming in Winnipeg, Canada.

"My favorite part of filming this movie is just meeting so many incredible people, like all the castmates," Tevlin said.

All three actors are excited to visit Oklahoma for the first time for a fundraiser to benefit Best Buddies.

"I have some friends of mine that say that they got good barbeque there, and I love food, so I want to see how the barbeque is in Oklahoma," Felder said.

Roger Hendrick with the Tee Pee Drive-In said tickets are by donations, and all concession sales will also go to Best Buddies.

"It's a lot going on downtown and this is just an extension. We are trying to trying to make this a destination," Hendrick said.

Best Buddies said Oklahoma has a chapter headquartered in Tulsa, which will bring a great showing to the event.

The actors said they're excited and grateful for the support.

"Even though we have a disability, that it does not define us for who we are," Von Der Ahe said.
