A Tulsa woman who survived domestic violence said it's now her purpose to help others.
A group of supportive women is one thing that got Michelle Colbert through her darkest time.
"Every woman that came in contact with me had no idea what I was facing, but they loved on me and gave me the strength I needed, and I was not alone," she said.
Michelle said her ex-husband attacked her in 2021. The report said he strangled her, beat her with brass knuckles, and kicked her down a flight of stairs.
"I honestly didn't think I was going to make it through. I felt like it was just a matter of time before I crashed, because I didn't know, fear of the unknown and I was really unsure of life itself," she said.
She now wants to be the support system she had, for other women.
She created the event The Healer of the Broken Heart, where women can meet and listen to speakers who have been through all types of situations.
"I said I was going to live, but I didn't mean in the physical sense, I meant in the mental, my heart, I meant I was going to live and I was going to walk this out. It's not for me, I've already gone through it, everything is on purpose for others," she said.
Michelle said she wants other people in similar situations to know there is help out there, and they can live a happy and full life.
"Once you made it up in your mind that you are going to live, you're going to become a survivor, you're going to make it, you're going to thrive, you can do it. There's nothing that's holding you back except yourself. Take that first step and make that choice to choose you," she said.
Registration starts at 8:30 on Saturday, June 3 at First Baptist Church South in Beggs. Tickets are $15. The event is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with lunch provided.
