The City of Broken Arrow is asking for people who want to step up and serve their city. They’re trying to get someone to fill the open city council seat for Ward 4.

The seat is open after a man who got elected decided it was too much to balance his work and home life and decided to leave.

State law says Broken Arrow has 60 days to fill the open Ward 4 City Council seat.

The City Council wants to appoint someone, but said if they don’t get the right candidate, they can still hold a special election.

So, the city is looking for people who would be interested in volunteering their time to help the city.

"Right now, what we're doing, is we're soliciting letters of interest for those folks who are interested in this position,” said Aaron McColloch, the Communications Director for the City of Broken Arrow. “That's a resume, maybe, perhaps, what you see as the challenges, the opportunities, as far as the city is concerned."

The person must have lived in Ward 4 for the past six months, be a registered voter, and at least 18 years old.

City leaders said joining the council is a great way to make your voice heard and help your fellow citizens.

"If they're interested, this is their opportunity to reach out,” said McColloch. “We have boards, commissions, and of course the City Council. It's a great way to stay engaged and involved with what's going on with what's happening in this city."

The City Council will hold a meeting on Monday, where candidates will answer questions and give presentations.

So far, four people have applied.

"City Council is going to review that, then there will be an opportunity at that special meeting to meet with those people to discuss what they see as far as the growth opportunities and challenges within the city,” said McColloch. “Then it will ultimately be up to the City Council to decide do we appoint somebody, or not."

The city said even though the seat is vacant right now, the citizens who live there are still being represented.

"If this were to go to a special election, all residents in all wards would actually vote for the representative for Ward 4,” said McColloch. “So those people aren't going without representation, they are still being represented by the other council members."

If someone is appointed, they would serve in that seat until Tuesday, April 1, 2025.

If you’re interested in the Ward 4 City Council seat, you have until Thursday at 5 p.m. to submit your letter of interest to the City Clerk.

There are no formal requirements for the letters of interest, they can be an email or formal letter stating that you would be interested in the position.

Potential candidates can also include resumes with their letters of interest.

People can email their letters of interest to City Clerk Curtis Green at cugreen.brokenarrowok.gov

They can also call him with questions at 918-259-2400 ext. 5418.
