It's been a little over two weeks since a 15-year-old Bixby High School soccer player, Kinsey Wright, died in a car crash after Tulsa police say 18-year-old Jacob Tucker ran a stop sign at 121st and Yale and hit her car. Her family and teammates are honoring her in a special way.
Kinsey Wright was one of Lilly Wing’s best friends.
“She was a super, super, super supportive person,” she said.
Damon and Krista Wright say their daughter was the teammate everyone relied on and a friend everyone needed
“It just threw me back how comfortable she was not just in herself, but with her friends, on the soccer field," her father Damon said.
Now, Kinsey’s loved ones are walking down a road they would have never imagined, but they're doing it together.
Kinsey’s teammates are making sure her legacy lives on by making ribbons they'll pass out to each opposing team they play this season. Each ribbon carries a special message and one Kinsey lived by: trust God.
The ribbons serve as a reminder to play for Kinsey and to continue her story. Kinsey’s parents say ribbons were a tradition for her club team and they would make ribbons and tie them on their bags for special events.
“At the funeral, this special group of '08 girls that are her sisters brought us one more ribbon and it was this pink ribbon that the girls are making today and asked us if we could add that to her hand before they buried her, so we were able to open the casket and put that one last ribbon in there for her,” said Kinsey's mother, Krista.
Lilly made another ribbon in Kinsey’s casket.
“I love it; it’s like a part of me is with her still,” Lilly said.
And while Damon and Krista say this doesn’t take away the pain of their loss, it shows them how much Kinsey meant to everyone.
“We see her team bonding, we see the love that they’re sharing, we see that they’re playing for something greater now than just winning a soccer game," Krista said.
It is a beautiful tribute to a beautiful life gone much too soon.
“I hope she likes these," Lilly said.
Kinsey's coach says the team plans to hand out the first batch of ribbons to their opponent at the game this upcoming Saturday.
Jacob Tucker was arrested for negligent homicide.
