Grocery stores around Green Country are packed with people grabbing everything they need to make their Thanksgiving Day meals. Some shoppers say the price of putting food on the table is quickly adding up, while others are looking for deals.
The checkout lines are full of shoppers at Oasis Fresh Market near Pine and Peoria.
“I have the turkey and meat already,” said Nakeisha Preston, a shopper.
For people like Beverly Hicks, the trip to the market is hopefully her last.
“We started last Friday and then we took a break,” she said. “We did some more yesterday and we’re finishing up today.”
A Wells Fargo report shows the price for Thanksgiving dinner is cheaper than last year’s record high. The big ticket items like turkeys cost an average of $1.37 a pound, which is down nearly 16%.
While the price of some foods are dropping, other staples are getting more expensive. The report states green beans are up 9%.
“Things are a little more expensive,” said Vick.
There’s feeling of sticker shock when purchasing all the sides to feed her 30 guests.
“Cranberry sauce—some cans are $2,” she said. “That’s just unreal!”
The report shows items like potatoes and canned pumpkins are also up from last year. The price of a ham is approaching record highs this year.
