Thanksgiving is just a couple of days away and Food On The Move is ensuring everyone has a reason to be thankful.
Food On The Move provides thousands of pounds in food assistance through its Community Food and Resource Festival.
It’s the season of giving, and Food On The Move says it’s providing more than 5,000 pounds of food to more than 200 families just in time for a Thanksgiving meal.
Food On The Move's volunteers work to ensure that recipients are not only filling up their plates -- but also their hearts during the holiday season.
Program Director Rusty Rowe says being able to give during the holidays is a more special feeling.
“I'm thankful that this is my job. I can't believe I get to do this. Like, every day, this is my job is to be able to bring people things that they need. That's huge to me,” Rowe said.
Food On the Move distributes nutritious food to families facing a diverse range of challenges offering a glimmer of hope and relief.
Rowe says it wouldn’t be possible without volunteers like K-Hit’s On-Air Personality, Kacy Termini.
"It's the right thing to do. It's what we should all be doing and it's always a great time of year to sit there and go, 'Man, we have a lot to be thankful for.' So, what can we do? Love one another,” Termini said.
For many recipients, assistance from Food On The Move is a lifeline during a time that is often associated with abundance.
Recipients like Teri Vaught say it's a blessing to receive healthy options people may not be able to get on their own.
“The vegetables and fruits alone are a godsend. They are so expensive. If you eat healthy, it costs way more than any junk food,” Vaught said.
Food On The Move says its efforts are to overcome the stigma of asking for help by offering a warm and welcoming environment.
“It's community helping community. We never want it to feel like something to be ashamed to be at. We want it to feel like something your neighborhood would be doing,” Rowe said.
The next Community Food and Resource Festival is December 14th at Tulsa Community College.
