Tulsa firefighters are raising awareness about some of the hidden dangers they face in the field.
January is Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month, and the Tulsa Fire Fighters organization said it is committed to protecting those who protect us.
The group said firemen are about one and a half times more likely to get cancer at some point in their lives.
President Matt Lay with the organization said firefighters deal with smoke, toxic fumes, and gases that can develop into different forms of cancer.
"About 60 percent of firefighter line of duty deaths are related to occupational cancer. And so we took steps as an association to create a fund specifically designed to help our firefighters battling cancer. So any time somebody shows up with a diagnosis or biopsy that says they've got cancer, we're stepping in to provide some financial relief and also organize fundraisers, events, chances for the community to rally and show their support for these firefighters as they battle cancer," Lay said.
The group said one thing firefighters can do to stay safe is wear protective equipment.
Lay said the Tulsa City Council is set to meet later this month to decide on about $600,000 worth of new equipment for the fire department.
