City leaders in Bristow have created a new program to keep an eye out for elderly and disabled residents living alone.
The city is calling them "Are you Okay?" calls and is hoping to reach people who could benefit from daily welfare checks.
The mayor of Bristow says this free service is just about two weeks old, but she hopes it gains traction.
A simple phone call can mean a lot to someone, and for people living alone, a quick question could save a life.
“I thought 'Why don't we have this',” Bristow Mayor Kris Wyatt said.
Wyatt saw that other cities across the country have services like this, where people just sign up to have someone check in on them. In Bristow, it's run through police dispatch.
"Every day or at a time of your preference, someone will make a call and just ask if you are okay, and if you're okay that's logged that it's done," she says.
If they don't answer after three calls, police are sent out to check on the person. Wyatt says this service just makes sense for a tight-knit community that cares about each other.
"We're really just trying to reach the people who don't have someone checking on them and that's kind of a tough group to find I'm finding so spreading the word and hopefully someone will see this and think it would be nice if someone would check on me," says Wyatt.
If you or a loved one is looking to sign up, just visit or call Bristow City Hall at (918) 367-2237’
News On 6 called the city of Westlake, Ohio, where a similar service has been running for more than 10 years. And a staff member in their community services department said at least once a year they help someone who otherwise would not have gotten help.
