A Catoosa woman is recovering after police say she was shot at a party this past weekend in Tulsa.
A night out quickly turned into a nightmare for Mellanie Potter.
"It happened so, so fast,” she said.
She and her friend Omare Dale were at a party in North Tulsa when a fight started around 1:00 Saturday morning.
“Everyone had started to go outside, the music stopped playing, and that's when Omare had actually come up to me, and she was like, 'I think we should go,'” Potter said.
After running away to escape the chaos, Mellanie heard a gun going off. She was shot in the leg.
“It almost feels like a firework in my leg,” she said.
“I’m talking to Mel, and I’m just like, ‘You’re gonna be okay. It's your leg. You’re gonna be alright,'” said Dale.
Tulsa Police and an ambulance arrived shortly after, and Mellanie was transported to St John.
3 days later, she’s up and walking, but she’s not fully healed physically or mentally. She said it hurts even more knowing the shooter wasn't arrested.
“I’m hurt by what he did, and it's definitely something that's gonna stick with, not only me but her,” Potter said.
Mellanie said how fast everything escalated was terrifying.
“It was so fun, and then, next thing you know, you’re outside, and you’re running from 10, 13 bullets,” she said.
And while grateful to be alive, Mellanie and Omare encourage others to be careful and trust your instincts in crowds.
“Listen to your gut,” said Potter. “Better safe than sorry,” said Dale.
Mellanie said she did file a police report. Tulsa Police say there are no updates on the investigation at this time.
