Oklahoma's grocery sales tax cut went into effect today. State leaders say Oklahoma families can expect to save hundreds of dollars each year on their grocery bills.

Inside grocery stores across the state, only select items will have the 4.5% sales tax removed. Some of those big items range from water bottles to canned goods.

The sales tax will remain for items like alcohol, toothpaste, and any food prepared by the grocery store.

All of this has been decided by the Oklahoma State Tax Commission.

News On 6's Autumn Bracey went shopping Wednesday to see how much this would save you on your next grocery trip.

She scanned eight items to show how much the items cost with the state grocery taxes still in effect. Some of the items included gum, water, and peanut butter, which cost $25.40.

Those same items were purchased Thursday after the state grocery tax had been eliminated.

The total was $24.35, which saved $1.05. It may not seem like a lot of money, but state leaders say this sales tax cut means Oklahomans could save about $400 per year on their grocery bills.

One thing to keep in mind is that cities and counties can still charge their own sales taxes on groceries.
