Arkansas State handed the Tulsa Golden Hurricane its first loss of the season, a 28-24 victory over Tulsa on Saturday from Centennial Bank Stadium in Jonesboro, Arkansas.
The Red Wolves overcame a 17-7 halftime deficit by scoring 21 points in the third quarter, improving their record to 2-0. Meanwhile, Tulsa fell to 1-1.
Seth Morgan opened the scoring for TU with a 29-yard field goal, but down 7-3, the Golden Hurricane made the second quarter theirs. Kirk Francis threw 39 yards to Kamdyn Benjamin and Cardell Williams ran for five yards to give Kevin Wilson's team a 17-7 lead at the half.
The third quarter was decisive as Red Wolves' QB Jaylen Raynor scored on a 15-yard touchdown and on a pass to Corey Rucker from five yards out. Sandwiched in between those was a nifty 77-yard punt return by Courtney Jackson. For the night, Raynor threw for 255 yards and two scores, going 21 for 32 on the night.
Freshman Kirk Francis went 16 for 28, a touchdown pass and one interception.
The Golden Hurricane host Oklahoma State next Saturday at 11 a.m., a game you can watch on ESPN 2.
