More than 5,000 volunteers worked across Green Country on Friday for the United Way Day of Caring.
A large group of volunteers were making improvements at Monroe Demonstration Academy in Tulsa.
“They are showing what it really means to live united in a community and when we come together in connection, and just wanting to do good things for other people, amazing things can happen,” said Alison Anthony, CEO of Tulsa Area United Way
Anthony says this is the 33rd year for the Day of Caring and it gets bigger every year.
Volunteers worked at several Tulsa Public School campuses on Friday, and deputy superintendent Kathy Dodd says a day like this helps the district with projects they wouldn't be able to complete.
“It's a way for us to benefit from resources within our community, at no cost to the district, it's all just incredible volunteer relationships that make this possible,” Dodd said.
Dodd says when students see these updates, they'll know that the community cares about them.
“On days like today when the community shows up and create spaces that add value and add beauty to the educational environment, it's a tangible way that our students see that they matter,” she said.
And when students know people care, Anthony says they'll want to pay that forward and give back to others themselves.
“When these kids show up to school on Monday, and see what has been done, that will inspire them to give back and do better because they know that people care about them and this community invests in them,” Anthony said.
