Coffee with a Cop is a chance for students and officers to get to know each other. Some deputies took the opportunity to learn more about the students at Vandever Elementary in Broken Arrow on Wednesday.
As parents waved goodbye to their children during drop-off at Vandever Elementary, special guests were there to assist with the carpool line.
Corporal Justin Greene from the Tulsa County Sheriff's Office and other police officers not only opened car doors for students but also took the time to engage with them. From asking serious questions to having some fun, Greene was delighted by the laughter and conversations he shared.
"I think it's important for our children to be validated by other adults. For us to show interest in what they are interested in," Greene said.
He’s passionate about being out in his community and interacting with these kids while in uniform.
"Often, when we are out on a call, we are going to people on their worst day because their home has been broken into, something bad has happened, or they are getting a ticket. But we don’t want people to only see us in those roles. We want them to see that we are people too and that we care. We are here for our community," Greene said.
One third grader enjoyed spending time with Greene and the other officers before going to class.
"They are really fun because they give us high fives and all of that," Marley Miller said.
There wasn't a lot of time before the bell rang and the kids ran inside, but Greene says even the smallest interactions had a big impact on his day.
"That's what it's about for me. Seeing the smiles on their faces, it warms my heart," Greene said.
