Oklahoma State freshman quarterback Maealiuaki Smith gave fans a glimpse of the future during the Cowboys' senior night game against Texas Tech in Stillwater on Saturday.
Although the Cowboys fell short, Smith's performance was a highlight, earning him Big 12 Newcomer of the Week honors.
The Sacramento native completed more than 70% of his passes, throwing for 316 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for a score. Teammates and coaches praised Smith's preparation and poise.
“Give him the opportunity, you know, to showcase his talent, and I’m glad he got in,” said receiver Rashod Owens. “We trusted him, he trusted us, and we had two weeks of preparation to get him ready as a starter.”
Smith's debut showcased his strong arm, mobility, and ability to distribute the ball effectively among receivers. Head Coach Mike Gundy was impressed by Smith’s confidence and ability to handle the pressure of a full game.
“Well, I think all of this surprised me just because you don’t ever know until we put him out there,” Gundy said. “That position is just different, and until they get out there and play a whole game … you never know how they’re gonna react. But I thought he had poise and played with confidence.”
With his standout performance, Smith is expected to start again on Friday as the Cowboys face Colorado in their season finale.
