A 10-year-old boy from Miami, Oklahoma, died after being hit by a utility terrain vehicle Tuesday night in Ottawa County, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
The fatal collision happened shortly after 8 p.m. on April 22 along South 490 Road, about seven miles west of Commerce.
Troopers say a 67-year-old man was driving the 2018 Can-Am Defender. The boy was flown to St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa, where he later died from his injuries.
Three other people were on the UTV, but nobody else was injured. The crash is still under investigation.
Authorities have not released the child’s name. Commerce Public Schools released a statement Wednesday saying one of its elementary students died overnight.
"It is with a heavy heart that I share the tragic news of the passing of one of our elementary students during the night," Superintendent Stephen Moss said in a statement posted online. "We are deeply saddened by this unimaginable loss."
Counseling services and support will be available across all campuses, the letter said.
