The New Year means a new beginning for one Oklahoma teen.  Last year doctors told him a car accident wrecked his chances of ever playing basketball again.  News On 6 anchor Latoya Silmon reports Chance Cavin has proved them wrong.

Chance Cavin is getting a second chance at life and his first love of basketball.  It's a goal he never lost sight of even when the experts told him it was out of reach.

Each pass, free throw and three-pointer seemed like a long shot a year ago.

"I was in the hospital for two months. Had three surgeries," said Cavin.

A car accident almost wrecked Cavin's future.

"Driving down the road late at night and my buddy was driving, and we got into a car wreck. I flew out the back window of the car, slammed me on the ground," said Cavin.

Doctors said he'd never walk again.  While the road to recovery was tough, Cavin was determined to rebound.

"I just kept thinking to myself every day, I know I can play. I know I can play.  That just made me push myself everyday even more," said Cavin.

Now Cavin is the leading scorer for the Prue Rockets, but his coach says he's much more than that.

"He's just a remarkable kid and on top of that he has a great attitude.  He's friendly, fun. He's neat to be around. I'm just glad to have met him," said Heath Kelley.

This 18-year-old says he only did what he had to do, because for him life without basketball is no life at all.

"I kind of second chanced myself. I guess that's why my mom named me Chance.  I chanced it so I took a chance," said Cavin.

And he scored big time.

Chance dreams of playing college basketball and in the NBA.  Some might say those are impossible goals for someone who is so short, but he has proved others wrong before so you never know.
