OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) A state lawmaker is being recognized for his work on behalf of the elderly.

The AARP has given Representative Randy Terrill of Moore an award for his work on legislation giving grandparents due-process rights when a grandchild is taken into state custody.

The new law requires state officials to notify grandparents of hearings and allow them to be heard in custody battles if the grandparents have been a child's primary caregiver for at least six months.

Terrill says Oklahoma has the second-highest rate of grandparents raising grandchildren in the United States. He says grandparents are providing grandchildren with a stable home life that is critical for the child's development and education.
