(Oklahoma City-AP) -- Justice Sandra Day O'Connor says learning to deal with skunks and scorpions on her childhood Arizona desert ranch may have helped her become the first female justice on the US Supreme Court.

O'Connor spoke at Oklahoma City University Monday evening.

Her first baby sitters were "roughshod cowboys" who used to sleep on the front porch of her family's home at the Lazy B Ranch.

O'Connor received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from OCU President Tom J. McDaniel and Board of Trustees Chairman William F. Shdeed.

After the presentation, O'Connor talked about her early career in law before hundreds of people who came to listen to her speech.

O'Connor says she got into law because she wanted to make a difference.
