The May 1999 tornadoes did much of their damage in the Oklahoma City area, but a twister did touch down in west Tulsa.

Five years later, the May 3rd tornadoes still linger in the minds of the Tulsans who were affected by the devastating storms.

News on 6 anchor Scott Thompson says west Tulsa wasn't the hardest hit area in the state on May 3rd 1999, but the area damaged was part of the heart of the community, both a west Tulsa church and a nearby Tulsa elementary school.

Remington Elementary School took a double blow. A tornado ripped off part of the roof, and then a thunderstorm drenched the school causing more damage. A small river ran down the hallways and some school supplies like books were destroyed.

Students spent two days at home, and then finished up the year at neighboring schools. Remington reopened in the fall of 1999. Five years later, the tornado has left its mark on Remington Elementary. The damage was repaired, but the May 3rd tornadoes did change the school's disaster plan.

Carbondale Assembly of God also took a major hit on May 3rd 1999. Half-a-dozen people were inside the church when the tornado struck, none of them were hurt. But most of the church was destroyed.

The church has since been rebuilt.
