A Tulsa detective says scammers often target spouses of deployed military.  Detective Cheryl Compton spoke to spouses of national guardsmen this weekend.  She says identity theft is one of the biggest concerns.

That's why she says spouses should arm themselves with the right information to prevent it.

"There are probably websites out there where people could find out who has been deployed. Who is at home alone? You may have some of the spouses that are new to this, this is their first time, maybe they're not in charge of the home as far as writing the bills," said Detective Compton.

Here's some ammunition against identity theft:

-Shred all your important papers including pre-approved credit card applications.

-Get all your checks delivered to your bank not your home address.

-Put passwords on all your accounts and do not use your mother's maiden name.

-Never post credit card numbers

-Never put your credit card account number on the web unless it's encrypted on a secured site.
