Sand Springs Police are investigating the city's first murder in more than two years.   The News On 6's crime reporter Lori Fullbright reports work crews found the victim's body in a wooded area on Monday.  It appears the victim had been shot several times.  Police tell The News On 6 they already have a person of interest in the case.

Two crews were working in the 1600 block of North McKinley on Monday.  A contractor was moving rocks for the Sand Springs Parks Department and a Cox cable crew was also working in the area when the body was found.

Detectives and the medical examiner discovered 21-year-old Anthony Johnson had been shot several times.

"He was not alone.   Obviously someone else was present at the scene. We're trying to determine the facts that surround this," said Sand Springs Assistant Police Chief Mike Carter.

The body was found in a wooded area that was an abandoned walking trail.  Police don't know why he was there because it's a pretty isolated spot.

"Generally, overgrown down there, not a well used spot but occasionally, we do have teenagers who frequent the area," said Sand Springs Assistant Police Chief Mike Carter.

Police are making fast progress in the case because they already have a person of interest they want to question.

His name is Daniel Thomas.  Police say he's most likely driving a 2003 grey Chevy pickup.

"This is fortunately an unusual circumstance for our town," said Sand Springs Assistant Police Chief Mike Carter.

The last homicide in Sand Springs was in December of 2006.

Anyone who knows anything about the homicide should call Sand Springs Police at 245- 8777.
