Tulsa Drillers To Hold National Anthem Tryouts

The preparations were in place for another season of America's Pastime. The field is neatly groomed and the stands are ready to be filled. But, the arrangements aren't complete without the National Anthem.

The Tulsa Drillers held tryouts to sing the Star Spangled Banner.

"I actually came down looking for a job selling pop during the games," said Jeff Cross. "They said coincidentally they were having tryouts for the national anthem. My sinuses cleared up overnight. I was having a pretty good day and I was humming on the way down and I said ‘hey why not.'"

While Jeff bellowed out the lyrics amid an audience of a stray cat and the watchful eye of Drillers Staffer who won't be taking after a certain American Idol judge anytime soon.

"I think I'm a little kinder than Simon Cowell," said Drillers Office Manager Cheryl Northness. "I have a little more sympathy for these people. It's very cold today. I know it's difficult for them to sing under these conditions."

When the weather warms up and before the bats are swinging the game won't be complete without the precursor to the first pitch.

"It was wild, it was great," Cross said. "I'd like to be able to do it with the flag flying whether anybody else was there or not."

It's not too late for you to have a shot at being chosen to sing the National Anthem for the Tulsa Drillers. They're holding more auditions from Noon until 3:00 p.m. on Friday, April 4th.
