Prom season is fast approaching.  That means sequined gowns and cummerbunds.  But, News On 6 anchor Terry Hood reports for some kids buying a prom dress or renting a tuxedo may not be in the family budget.

Maranda Brantley is looking for a perfect pair of shoes.   A gentle step and she has the match to go with her perfect dress.

"The color and the sequins on it," said Sperry's Maranda Brantley as she puts together her look for prom.

She had her eye on another dress, but it came with a hefty price tag.

"The one that I wanted at JC Penney's was $225," said Maranda Brantley.

But, Prom Wishes stepped in to help. The non-profit group takes donated prom dresses, and all the accessories, and then gives them away.  Military families, single moms, and almost any child of a family in need benefits from their program.

"It means a lot to me because if I didn't have this dress I probably wouldn't be able to go to prom," said Maranda Brantley.

Prom Wishes is run entirely by teens.  Jamie Weatherman has been volunteering for the last four years. The hard part, she says, is finding the dresses, especially the larger sizes.

"Well, you see, we have two racks of the smaller sizes and one that's not even very full of the bigger," said Jamie Weatherman.

Dresses size 12 and up go here, Weatherman says, that's what they need the most.  If the girl can't find a dress that fits, she may not be able to go to the prom.  The same goes for the guys.

Prom Wishes also gives out tuxedos.  Maranda Brantley doesn't want to think what would happen if her date didn't have a tux.

"Um, probably would dump him and go with somebody else," jokes Maranda Brantley.

The volunteers don't want that to happen.  Everyone, they say, should go to the prom.

"When you see their smile, when they find the one that fits, they love. It just makes you kind of feel like, like really warm inside," said Jamie Weatherman.

Donations are being accepted at all area Tulsa Teacher's Credit Union branches.
