The pound of plastic can signify sensory overload if you're on the losing side of a fast-paced foosball game.

"In this game you constantly have to adapt to what's going on," said Tommy Adkisson, who is the third ranked foosball player in the world.

With a quick flick of a wrist, Tommy Adkisson's usually the one putting a punishing on foosball foes. He excels in a game that consists of thought fueled by deft hand-eye coordination.

"Foosball is a mix between soccer and chess is what I refer to it as," said Adkisson.

Adkisson's foosball fury has been equally fun as it is financially giving. He estimated earnings of between $60,000 and $70,000 per year in the 1990s. Today, he's still one of the world's top players. Adkisson never knew moving plastic figures on metal rods would make him so much money.

"It's something I never dreamed of. Not many people can have a hobby they can actually make money at," said Adkisson.

On this night, Adkisson's taking on some locals at Sharky's weekly foosball fest. It keeps the seasoned veteran sharp for upcoming showdowns.

"I learn something new every time I play it," said Adkisson. "That's why I keep coming back."

Foosball tournaments are held every Saturday at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday at 7:00 p.m. at Sharky's located at 3415 South Peoria Avenue.
