School is out for Dr. Michael Zolkoski. The superintendent for the state's largest school district was out of a job Monday night, less than two years after being hired. News On 6's Ashli Sims reports after a school in crisis, a scathing investigation, and four months of some very public scrutiny, the Tulsa School Board and Dr. Michael Zolkoski decided to call it quits.

Dr. Michael Zolkoski was greeted with cheers and a show of support before the special board meeting. Armed with "Z" buttons, many had nothing but high praise for the embattled superintendent.

"He has gone out into the community and found the ones that have not graduated and brought them in and encouraged them. He gave them the opportunity to go forward and they've done it," said Aurora Ramirez Hilton, Community Leader.

"Out for support today; to let them know that we have a good superintendent and let him know, I am supporting him tonight," said Tara Tumey, TPS Parent.

Less than four hours later, it was clear Zolkoski had lost the support of the school board.

The Tulsa Academic Center might be considered Zolkoski's downfall. He came under fire after reports of frequent violence and overcrowding.  (Read the full TAC Report)

"We did not ask for Doctor Zolkoski's resignation. The fact of the matter is, and you all know it that we have been caught up in a lot of controversy, and this has been a hot story and folks have reported it and it has gone on and on for quite a while," said Gary Percefull, School Board President.

The vote was unanimous to accept a settlement agreement. TPS will pay Zolkoski $400,000. And he will stay on for the next 90 days. The school leader, known for his swagger, in the end was overcome with emotion.

"Parents, community leaders, faculty and staff, those who supported my administration, I give you my heartfelt thanks... Again, I want to thank the Tulsa School Board for giving me the opportunity to work in a great city and school district," said Dr. Michael Zolkoski, TPS Superintendent.

The Tulsa School Board would now like to talk to Keith Ballard, current executive director for the Oklahoma State School Board Association, about leading the district. Ballard has experience as a superintendent at Claremore and Oologah Public Schools.
