Teen Competes In Film Competition

TULSA, OK--"My name is Heather Brazille and I'm an aspiring filmmaker," said Heather Brazille.

Although young, the 19-year-old Broken Arrow native knows what she wants to do with her life.

"What I really like is that you can inspire someone through film and that's kind of what sparked my interest," said Heather Brazille.

"My mom is an accountant and my dad is in computers, and my brother wants to be an engineer so it's completely opposite of them. I totally don't fit in to that whole thing, but they're supportive as parents can be," said Heather Brazille.

Heather's getting ready to start her sophomore year at TU. She's double majoring in English and Film.

"Hopefully one day I can combine them both and write my own movies," explained Heather Brazille.

Heather says as a full-time student, who also works, she often finds herself online looking for scholarships and programs for young filmmakers.

Online is where she found out about the Samsung Mobile Fresh Films Competition.

Soon she was all packed and headed to Dallas to get started.

"I was really nervous because I didn't know anyone. There were 13 other kids and we all clicked right away," said Heather Brazille.

Heather spent a week in Dallas working with her crew and when the week was over they had a seven minute film to prove they worked hard. It's called "Saturday."

"This film relates to anyone I think, especially teenagers because I think with every teenager there's this sense of angst and wanting to get out at a certain age and this film shows a girl who's going through that and this film gives every teenager hope to stick it out," said Heather Brazille.

Her team has already won their region and now they are competing for a trip to the AFI Fest.

Heather is hoping to gain some support locally.

"This weekend at Ida Red on Brookside on Saturday at about 9 o'clock we'll have a screening of the film and have some cakes and soda and just get the word out about how to vote. I think growing up in Oklahoma instead of New York and Los Angeles it's harder to get into film and people kind of look at you strange but Tulsa has this huge art community. I think this program helped Oklahoma and Texas show Hollywood we're here, even though we may not be huge, we're going to be able to do it," said Heather Brazille.
