A family celebrates a bittersweet birthday for a young boy killed in a car accident. The boy and his sister passed away following a crash on April 20 in Del City.

Kannon Houston would have turned eight years old on Thursday, his sister Karli was just six. The family says the two were inseparable and wanted to remember them with a balloon release.

Inside a daycare center in Southeast Oklahoma City where the children went, sits a bouquet of blue balloons for Kannon and a single pink heart-shaped one for Karli. The balloon had stickers with messages like “I pray this gets to you,” and “To know you was to love you.”

“Bip and Bop were their nicknames,” said Brenda Jones, the children’s great-aunt. “They were inseparable.”

Even in death, the two died in a car accident along Southeast 15th and South Bryant. They were with their neighbor, 54-year-old Helen Thompson.

“I can't speak for the whole family, but it's been, I can say detrimental, it's been hard,” Jones said.

According to Del City Police, Thompson, the driver, lost control, veered off the road, and struck a tree that day. Thompson also died in the accident. She had just left her daughter’s baby shower.

“We're all going to find peace eventually, but it's a struggle,” Jones said. “You've got to find your peace where you find your peace.”

Jones says she finds peace with the Lord and is comforted by the fact the children also walk in faith.

“They loved going to God's house,” she said. “They get excited about being junior ushers they get excited about reading scriptures in church being in church plays they loved that and so I can truly say with a clear heart and a clear mind that they loved God at an early age.”

On Thursday, family and friends celebrated Kannon's birthday, who would have been eight, by releasing the balloons into the sky.

“We just want to remember him, he was an awesome kid, his sister was an awesome kid, they loved God,” Jones said. “They were darlings, everybody loved them, definitely missed already.”

Thompson’s 13-year-old niece and 9-year-old grandson were also in the car but survived.
