Duncan 19-Year-Old Charged With Killing His Parents, Teenage Sister

The son of a slain Duncan family gives a confession and is subsequently charged with murder.

Marlow newspaper publisher, John Hruby, 50, his wife, Tinker, 48, and their teenage daughter, Katherine, were found shot to death in their home earlier this week.

Alan Hruby, 19, a freshman at the University of Oklahoma, has been charged with three counts of murder with deliberate intent.

During the formal arraignment, Hruby trembled and cried as the judge denied bond in his case.

“It wasn't remorse because [he] lost his mom, dad and sister,” said Stephens County District Attorney Jason Hicks. "It was remorse, because he knows that his life is basically over.”

Hicks has not decided if the state will seek the death penalty in this case, but he said it would be “seriously considered” because Hruby carefully calculated and carried out the murders.

The probable cause affidavit shows Hruby shot and killed his parents and sister on October 9.

In a confession, Hruby allegedly claimed he parked in a nearby neighborhood, walked in his family's home in the 1200 block of Bent Street through a back door and shot his mother, Tinker, twice.

According to court records, he shot his sister, Katherine, next -- once in the back of the head.

Hruby then allegedly waited for his dad, John, to come home.

Hruby is accused of then shooting his father twice.

The gun used in the killing, a 9mm handgun, was reported stolen the same day.

His father noticed the gun was missing from the console on the way to work and called the Duncan Police Department.

The gun has not been recovered.

Hruby allegedly admitted that after the shootings, he dumped the gun and the home's security video in a nearby lake.

He then drove back to his dorm at the University of Oklahoma, where he intentionally left his cell phone.

Prosecutors said he left the cell there so investigators could not ping him at the home at the time of the murders.

Hicks said Hruby has no remorse for what he did.

After allegedly killing his family, Hruby drove to Dallas to the see the OU-Texas game.

Prosecutors said Hruby spent the weekend at the Ritz-Carlon, a five-star hotel, with friends, although none have reported him acting unusual during the trip.

That type of lavish lifestyle was the alleged motive for the murders. Hruby had a problem with spending, and his parents had recently cut him off financially.

Hicks said Hruby owed $3,000 to a loan shark company in Norman, "He felt like if he murdered his mother, father and sister that he would be the only heir to their estate.”

Now, he is being held without bond at the Stephens County Jail.
